Takano sighed as he prepared his equipment for the living world. It would seem shortly after finishing his spar with Vayle, he was given a brand new reconnaissance mission. The one time he didn’t want a mission was now. But, Takano had come up with a solution to this issue. Since Vayle offered him lunch after the spar, he would certainly take her up on the offer. They would just have to go get their lunch in the living world! A clever solution to an annoying problem! He had already sent her a message about it, though he decided to forgo any mentions of Hollow research until they actually met up. He wished to give those details in person, easier to explain. The sky was bright as Takano sat atop the rooftop of a random building, waiting for Vayle to meet him there. He’d reach into his pocket and produce his pack of cigarettes, cussing as he found one left. “Well, looks like I’ll be having to make a stop on the way back” “Or don’t…” “It’s my body, I’ll do what I want mom” “But Reika made it…” Takano paused. “Good point. Guess I just won’t be telling her then!” He’d pop the cigarette in his mouth as Chiyu muttered something in defeat. Hopefully Vayle would get here soon, he was hungry and really didn’t want to spot that hollow before eating. “Hey Taki…” “Yeah?” “Why did you want to go out to lunch so much…” “What do you mean? I was hungry” “But you’ve gone three days without eating so you could continue your research before…” “Well...That doesn’t mean I want to do that everytime! Besides, It’s a free meal. I ain’t gonna pass that up” Vayle Cameo

Vayle smirked as she saw Takano for the first time in a while. "Yo! Takano!" The death god yelled, standing in some fairly normal blue jeans and a red blouse. "Y'know, I kinda thought last time I saw you that your hair looked that way 'cause you got hit with an explosion and didn't want to admit it, but I guess it just looks that way, huh?" The girl asked cheerfully, seemingly completely oblivious to the obvious insult she'd made. "Anyways, you wanted to go to a ramen place, right? Though I really wasn't expecting you to specify the human world. I kinda think it's one of those things we might actually do better than the people here... ahh well! Let's get going, shall we?"
Mahoutsukai sat, invisibly, on her back, just in case she needed something, along with a small package of sould candy. "Geez, you're chipper today. You really like visiting the human world, don't you?" Mahoutsukai questioned.
Vayle would smile back to her blade. "Well, I doubt I'm going to get to come to the human world as often as more jobs come up, so I figure, why not enjoy this little piece of history while I still can, y'know?" She responded, almost hopping off the rooftop before realizing, "...Oh! right! Stairs down, too!" she noted, before heading towards the stairway she got up here with. "Let's go then, Takano! I'm hungry enough to eat a horse!"

Takano gave a wave as Vayle finally arrived, pausing as she mentioned his hair. Takano would sigh and give a meek grin as he began walking towards the restaurant he had found. “I never got why everyone always cared so much about my hair. I got more important things to worry about…” Takano would light up his last cigarette before taking a slow inhale, savoring it while it lasted. “Speaking of important things!” He’d remove the cigarette and blow a puff of smoke out. “I was given an observational mission before I got here. Turns out there's possible Hollow activity they want me to check out. Kinda swayed my choice on where to go, so sorry about that. Hopefully it’s just a dud” “But Taki, you always complain when it is a d-” “Anyways! The place I found was pretty nice. Nothing too fancy, but it’ll work” It would take the duo about ten minutes of walking before finally reaching the restaurant. It was a small dinner with a cheery atmosphere and a few customers. Given it was getting pretty late out, he was surprised this place wasn’t packed. Takano entered in and took a seat at the nearest booth, making sure he had a good view of the outside. “So, you said you don’t get to come here too often? It’s a shame. I’ve been assigned to research projects over here for about a year now. Some of the stuff they got here is awesome. People are usually nice too, lot less up tight than the Society. You got anything you’re wanting to see before heading back?” Takano rested his head on his hand, waiting for the waitress to come by and take their order. Vayle Cameo

Vayle gave a small grin at Takano as he brushed off the hair comment. "Well it's on your head, right above your face, so it's one of the first things to let people pick ya out of a crowd." She responded smoothly, watching Takano smoke. "I can't say I'm exactly thrilled about workin' on my day off, but I'll help ya out. May as well make it 7 days in a row..." Vayle added with a pout. "...Well, provided you tell me what observational missions even are, anyways!"
After Takano took another drag of his smoke, Vayle's eyes sparked with interest. "Hey, could'ja throw me one of those cigare-"
No sooner than Vayle had said a single word than a bright stream of rainbow energy blasted from the hilt of her kodachi, striking the cigarette and incinerating it.
"...I, uhm...." Vayle would stammer.
"No." Mahoutsukai stated with a dangerous tone Vayle knew better than to test.
"...I'll, uhh, buy you a new pack on the way. For just you. None for me I think." Vayle responded meekly, keeping her hands up as she realized how close that could really be for her. After all, she wouldn't have been that surprised if Mahoustukai opened fire on her if she tested that patience a second time.
So smoking was just... not allowed, she guessed.
---
After they entered the restaurant, Takano explained how he was planning on doing lunch, and Vayle finally decided to take a breath. "Uhhh... I'm not really sure? I don't get out here too much, like I said." Vayle added, thinking back to the things she'd seen people do here.
"...We could enter a drift race! Ooh, or join a big marathon! or, uhhh, we could do skydiving in our gigai! That'd be awesome!"

Takano gave a slight grin as the waitress finally arrived, handing them both menus. “As much as free falling in my Gigai sounds, I’m not too sure if that’s something we can do in one day. Unless we jump from a skyscraper or something” Takano would glance outside before returning his gaze back to the menu. “I meant something a bit more simple, like sight seeing. I heard there was a really nice park around here, has this badass looking statue and everything” As he set the menu down, the waitress would return to take their orders. “I’ll just get some Saki to drink and the Miso Ramen” After taking Vayle’s order, he’d hand the waitress his menu before resting his head back on his hand and yawning. “Didn’t seem like your Zanpakuto liked me very much. Or at least didn’t like me smoking. I don’t get why every one of them I’ve met always scolds me for smoking. No need to worry about buying me a new pack by the way, I can pick one up on the way back” Takano would pause and think for a moment. “Speaking of your Zanpakuto, those powers of yours are pretty weird. A bit familiar too, but I can’t seem to place my finger on why. When I asked Chiyu about it, she didn’t even want to answer... You seemed pretty distracted during the spar too, everything alright up in there?” He’d tap a finger on his forehead. “Not that I’m calling you crazy or anything. But I did hit ya pretty hard in the head, wouldn’t want to leave any lasting damage” Vayle Cameo

"Oh. Park. Parks are a thing. Yeah, I'd love to check out a park. We don't really have those in the rukongai, and soul society's just got gardens..." Vayle would add, before having a thoughtful expression. "...I could always try gardening myself, but... Got a feeling I'd find it too much of a hassle to keep up with real fast."
"Listen. get the captain's quarters first. then worry about gardening, 'kay, Vayle?"
"Like I'm gonna get a captain's seat." Vayle would scoff back, which just got her a... very annoyed harumph from Mahoutsukai in return.
"...what?"
Mahoutsukai's only answer was silence, and Vayle had a slight frown. "...Man. I'm going to have to hear it later." She muttered, before focusing back on the conversation.
"Errr, my zanpakuto didn't..." Vayle thought for a moment. "Okay, she might not have the highest opinion, but I think it was more..." Vayle thought about it. "I don't think she liked the idea of me smoking. And by 'I don't think', I mean, I'm pretty dang certain." Vayle will add. "she's kinda... protective like that. Has been since I first met her. I can't say I mind it that much, though..."
As Takano continued, Vayle shrugged. "...I don't know why my powers are weird, really. Mahoutsukai's a direct kido type. She's capable of manipulating the magic of stars in various ways, so I get a lot of different techniques, but all of 'em basically come down to 'bang crash boom', ya know?"
Vayle thought about it. "...I don't know what'd make them... familiar, though, really. never met anyone with a zanpakuto like mine, though I think it's about par for the course."
At the second set of questions, Vayle started to look down into her own sake. "...I, uhhh, can't tell ya exactly... I'm a bit of an amnesiac, and every once in a while, certain muscle memories seem to come back. it's... how I dodged that first attack. I guess I must've been quite the fighter as a human, or something. It kinda made me wig out, though. sorry about that. it's just... one of those things I have to live with."
And with that confession, the death god chose to swig a good amount of sake to herself, feeling very vulnerable as she released the information. Still, it's not as though she hadn't already told Tsuyoshi a bit. what was the harm in telling some 12th division dude-
"...But I probably don't need, uhhh, treatment for it." Vayle answered with a nervous tone, remembering the 12th division's... interesting history. she'd rather not be a subject of interest.

Takano gave an awkward laugh before scratching the back of his head. He knew about the reputation which 12th Division had, the whole Mad Scientist thing. But ever since the new rules were implemented by the Captain Commander and Captain Akon took charge, things had been very...normal? They weren’t doing morally dark torture experiments anymore so that was a step in the right direction. “Heh, uh yeah. Don’t worry about that. A lot of the newer people in 12th Division are actually pretty nice. All the mad scientist types either left or got old” Takano took a sip of his Saki. “So, aiming to be a Captain, I see? Quite the bold plans, especially saying them out in the open. I’ve heard things have gotten a bit tense in the past couple of years with the Captains. Whole bunch of young people with high potential coming in, rule changes from the Captain Commander, and now we got all these new non-hollow threats popping up over here. Seems like the world’s getting ready to fall apart” Takano took another sip of his Saki. “I just hope the Captain Commander manages to keep that from happening. It’d be nice to have at least a few hundred years of peace before another bout of chaos” As Takano finished talking, the Waitress would arrive with their meals. Takano, starving from the fight, ate his rather quickly. After finishing he’d glance out at the window once more. “You’d be surprised at how often these Hollows pop up right in front of me. Guess they sense my Reiryoku or something, Shinigami were always tasty snacks for the weaker ones” He’d reach into his pocket and pull out a wallet, looking at Vayle. “You got any Yen to pay for the meal?” He’d ask the girl. Soul Society always gave him a certain allowance of Yen before every mission. This one was no different. Though Vayle promised to pay the meal, this restaurant wouldn’t accept Kan. “If not I can pay for it. Not like I’m really losing anything” Vayle Cameo

Vayle shrugged at the statement, giving a nervous laugh in return. "Yeah, I remember I joined a little while before he left, and, uhh... wow, captain Mayuri sure had a presence about him. sort of like a big cockroach, or a vulture waiting for carrion." Vayle would note with a blunt look.
At Takano's statement, Vayle blinked a couple of times. "Ohhh, uhhh, no, not at all. I didn't even want to be a seated officer, in all honesty, before, uhm, things happened..."
Vayle sighed. "Long story short, the former 20th seat of squad seven was dealing Kerozin-13 to the Rukon." Vayle noted with a dark look. Kerozin-13 was a well-known drug for temporarily giving a burst of spirit power to folks who had none, in exchange for an eventual death sentence... she had a feeling a 12th division guy didn't need that explanation, though. "He had a lot of pull, so part of me being able to expose him came down to putting my job on the line to expose him. And beating him happened to make me the new 20th seat. I don't really think some schmuck like me is really suited for the part, though. But... Mahoutsukai disagrees, I guess." Vayle would say with a slightly saddened look. after getting so used to her chipper voice, not having her around... sucked.
"But, yeah, I agree. Chaos sucks, and not just for shinigami..." Vayle would add. "I read about how high some of the human casualties got in the early skirmishes of the Winter War. One arrancar just sucking up dozens of souls like candy. I'd rather avoid another bout of civilian casualties by any means necessary."
As Takano continued to speak of shinigami, Vayle blinked, as she got out the yen for the meal. "Only the weaker ones?" She asked, getting the money ready on the table. "I thought the stronger ones were liable to try for a shinigami every so often, too."

Takano gave a nod as he placed his wallet back in his pocket. "Well, sometimes the best people to lead are the ones who don't want to. Don't remember which fortune cookie I saw that in but it sounded wise enough" He'd give a grin and a shrug. "Guess you could consider it a reward for stopping that asshole, too. You get more respect, more privileges and more recognition. Let's just hope we don't get some young dork trying to take your spot" Takano started to head to the door as Vayle continued on about the deaths during the winter war and asking questions about Hollows. Takano's forte! "At least things with the Arrancar seem to of calmed down. Man, what I wouldn't give to meet one. I've heard that a lot of them look practically like normal souls, such a fascinating evolution" Hed instinctively reach for his cigarette pack, before realizing he was out. "Tch. Well, as for the whole Hollow eating thing, a lot of the more powerful Hollows end up resorting to cannibalism. It's just the natural course of things as they grow more powerful. That's how we get Gillians and crap like that" Takano would pause as the two walked towards the park. "Not to say they won't eat Shinigami souls. It's just that we usually deal with the weaker ones in the living world. The powerful guys don't visit too often" Finally they would reach the park. A statue of some famous Shogun would stand proudly in the center of an elaborate fountain. Surrounding them would be forest on all sides. A beautiful site. "Anyone ever tell ya that you got this really weird aura about you? Not in like a bad way, at least not to me. Its kinda like your Zanpakuto, just seems a bit off" Vayle Cameo

"Pfff. Positions aren't meant to be some sorta reward. they're supposed to be staffed by people capable of doing their jobs well. I'm..." Vayle sighed. "...Well, the point is, I kinda miss being a rank-and-file shinigami, instead of havin' to do jobs above my lot in life." She responded. She'd managed to luck out so far and keep acing the missions soul society put her on for the most part, but...
"Lord knows the last two times they sent me in against the revenant, I lucked out by the skin of my teeth, and they want me to try an' make that miracle happen a third time next chance they can spot him. Not a post you'd expect for a shinigami who's had her shikai for all of a month or two." Vayle would note.
As Takano went on about Arrancards and the like, explaining things, Vayle nodded, realizing just how knowledgeable this guy might be on hollows.
"...Huh. You know a lot about hollows, huh? I guess that makes sense for a researcher. I'm not really interested in meeting an arrancar myself, honestly..." Vayle would add, and then sigh. "...It feels... wrong. to see that many souls crying out for freedom sitting in one body. Menos grande in human form. and we need to be at peace with the fact that they and the hundreds of souls they've eaten are stuck inside 'em. But..."
Vayle shrugged. "I suppose it's not exactly smart to try and wage war on allies in the fight against the hollows, either. The peace treaty makes sense, even if I don't like it."
As they got to the park, Vayle observed the shogun with a smile. "Wow! I wish they had statues like this in my section of the rukongai! This kind of craftsmanship is absolutely beautiful!"
At Takano's question, Vayle's head jerked over. "...Surprisingly, yes. Ayep. Mhm." Vayle would add. "I've heard it before. It means absolutely nothing though. I've been tested. Just a normal soul with slightly above average reishi. Not special in any way. if people get a weird idea, that's on them, I suppose."
And then, after snapping, give a short sigh. "...Sorry. I just... hear that one a lot, and honestly... don't know how best to answer it other than 'I dunno.' It's a mystery I just can't answer."
