The night seemed to be silent in the small town of Oakwoods, Illinois. This silence was to be expected as the night was approaching, but this would be very eerie... Not even a car could be heard traveling the roads, and even the twenty four hour shops seemed to be closed. Above the quaint town would be a full moon, a sign of good luck for some, and bad luck for others. Rumors throughout the soul society underworld had talked about this place, and none of these rumors were good. There was said to be a powerful hollow, an arrancar who had taken residence there about seven years ago. Various theories had come about as to where he was hiding in the town, but a few things were known about the man, or hollow for sure. 1) Most of the rumors pointed to the man's name being "El'gan the Dead," 2) The town has been seemingly abandoned for the last three years, and 3) no soul reaper has lifted a finger to investigate after all these years... For most soul reapers, these would be only rumors, but to Revenant, rumors like these were typically more than just that... The armored man stood crouched on top of a gas station's roof in the town. It appeared to be an old fashion kind of place that once contained a tightly knit community, it's sudden abandonment made no common sense. Looking through a pair of binoculars, he would scope out the area looking for any signs of life. There were no humans as far as his eyes could see, and no presence his mind could sense. Still, a shiver was sent down his spine as he could feel there was more to this than just appearances. He would grab hold of the mirror necklace he wore, and whisper "Zena, it's been hours... I've yet to see any sort of hollow. What's going on--"
Before the woman would even be able to respond, something strange would happen. The moon above the town began to emit a powerful energy signature, not one for offensive purposes, but sinister nonetheless... Suddenly spiritual energy signatures could be felt all around. It was as if the town was populated again. Taking another look through his binoculars, the armored brute would watch a man limp out of a coffee shop. He appeared injured, but Revenant would not be too quick to jump in as Zena began to explain, "That's the same power we felt once before. These creatures are human corpses, animated by a vial spell of a powerful hollow..."Revenant would grab hold of his twelve gauge, and quickly pump the weapon "Time to get to work..."

Vayle's grip on her Kodachi tightened. how the hell had she been mixed up in this bullshit. This was meant to be another pursuit order - given She'd failed to bring in Revenant twice now, even if she had defeated him, she had no idea why command kept giving her the same fucking mission against a man she never wanted to see again.
Vayle chuckled, holding up a hand as she had several times before now at the approaching hollows. "O lord, mask of blood and flesh, all creation, flutter wings, you who bears the name of man, Truth and temperance, upon this sinless wall of dreams unleash but lightly the wrath of your claws! Hado Number 33! Sokatsui!"
A wave of blue flames cut through another set of creatures, and Vayle leaned against the nearby bus, still laughing. hollowfied human corpses, a town full of them, and here she was defending a van of brave explorers who had decided to drive their stupid butts into this hell-hole. She'd much rather just be fighting the revenant right now.
Another set of groans echoed in the distance of the town, as the people inside the van screamed. She wished she could tell them to come change their goddamn tire instead of wasting their time hiding, before her stamina gave out, but unfortunately, none of them could see her-
"Uhm, Excuse me, miss?" A small voice asked. "...My name is Olive. Mom used to say I need to thank people, so thank you for protecting us."
Vayle looked behind her to see an adorable, black-haired kid with golden eyes.
Forcing a smile, Vayle realized that she might just have a chance here. "You're welcome. Could you ask people to come outside and fix the tire? Tell them their guardian spirit is protecting them while they do it."
That would have to be enough. the people couldn't see her, but corpses were plainly visible, as was the havoc she was wreaking. hopefully people would put the very simple two and two together. This wasn't a bad horror flick, after all.

A few blocks away from the van Vayle was defending, several shotgun blasts could be heard along with bright flashes of light. The source of these attacks were none other than Revenant, rampaging through the army of the dead. If there were any actual people in the area, then they had picked a really bad day to pass by the town. Several of the undead corpses would block his path down the streets of the town, until the armored berserker switched to his zanpakuto, mowing them all down in a few simple swings. The dead of this town we're not truly meant for combat purposes, they possessed far to little attacking power or defensive capabilities. If Revenant had to take a guess, these begins were being used as either servants, or a distraction. It was quite possible that it could be both in fact... Tearing through the horde one by one, he would eventually see the van in the distance and sensed Vayle's energy. Of course she would not be too far from him, always being the one to hunt him down and bring him in for the mass destruction of hollows. Usually he would grit his teeth and rage at the idea of a Shinigami on his tail, but this one time he needed her. If it as an Arrancar who summoned all these creatures, only killing the ring leader could truly stop them. Eventually he would make his way to the van, seeing the destroyed tire. "Well that's not good..." Revenant would shout to the people on the inside, "You all should get out here and fix that. I'm more than capable of dealing with the dead." [Words 279] Vayle Cameo

Vayle swore under her breath as she saw the Revenant pop up. "And then there's this..."
Vayle would look back to little Olive, talking to the people she couldn't but still very much in earshot.
"...Mean man." She finished lamely, choking back the swear word she would've preferred. Olive cocked her head in response to this, but said nothing about it, choosing instead to inform the bus what they couldn't inform them of themselves.
"They're all human, dude. Can't hear ya." Vayle would say to him. "Except for the kid. I'd wager she might be what's drawing them."
Vayle took a deep breath. she hated this entire scenario, but it really didn't look like she had a choice. She understood her duty. It wasn't to nurse old grudges, or bring criminals to justice. It was to save these people and get them the hell out of here.
"...I'm not sure where these zombies are spawning from. the hollow in charge is doing a very good job of hiding his spiritual pressure. You've been doing this non-stop so far, right? Got any clever ideas or fancy equipment that might help in this situation?" The death god asked. "I'm not entirely sure these creatures are going to run out before our reiatsu does."

Revenant was disappointed that the people were unable to hear him, for a moment he had forgotten that he lacked physical form. Even without it he would be more than a match for the wretched zombies that walked in his direction. The woman did bring up a valid point however, they would run out of reishi before the horde ran out of bodies. Though he enjoyed the killing of hollows, these people were not hollows themselves, merely puppets of the true enemy. Discerning the source of the energy would not be simple, but there was perhaps a way.
As Revenant sliced down a pair of corpses with his blade, he would begin to explain "Vayle! You'll have to time this just right if we want to find the thing that's doing all of this... Whenever one of these things die, reishi is quickly released from it and returned to it's summoner. In other words, he could do this all day, but we can also use it to find him... I'm going to pick a big target, keep your eye on it and try to track where it's energy goes."
The plus would turn his gaze from the Van to the horde, picking out a larger and far more bulky zombie from the rest. With his twin zanpakuto now in hand, he would charge the creature, slamming the weapons into it's stomach. The creature would bellow a loud roar as energy would fade from it's body. Revenant only hope that Vayle had picked up one where that power went...

Vayle watched the attacks of the revenant cut through corpse after corpse, and the woman had to grudgingly admit that he'd been massively improving over the years. The horde of zombies were like wheat next to the Revenant's blades.
"...So then, I can trust you with Olive and the rest?" Vayle asked with some trepidation in her voice as she said it. She was loathe to leave them in the hands of this butcher, despite knowing he didn't endanger civilians. an irrational thought tugged at her heart as she thought of that trusting little girl, as the rest of the people got off the bus.
"got it, Revenant." Vayle would say, before disappearing in a flash.
Kneeling down next to Olive, She would smile. "Olive, sweetie? I have to go tell off the big bad man. you stay here, okay?"
The girl's eyes teared up as she said so. "B-but... I don't want you to leave."
The Shinigami put a sturdy palm on the girl's head. "just... trust me. I'll only be a couple minutes. stay near the big guy with the swords, okay? He'll keep you safe."
The girl rushed forward and hugged onto a surprised Vayle's shirt, making everyone else in the bus jump at the site of her leaning against some invisible thing.
Vayle held the girl closer, wondering just what was compelling her to act this way. She didn't know this girl very well, and the girl didn't know her very well, and yet...
"Stay here. Stay safe. Trust me."
The sniffling child slowly nodded, and Vayle disappeared in a flash. "go for it, Revenant!" She yelled, tracking the reishi sources as she found 1... no, 2, 3... 4 sources! Decoys? or a set of powerful hollows.
"Revenant! Protect the Van! I"m going after the nearest source of spiritual pressure!" Vayle yelled, before holding out her blade.
"Dazzle, Mahoutsukai!"
The weapon flared to life, as Vayle felt the familiar tax upon her reishi. it'd have to be ignored for now - she had a job to do, and she sped the broom forward as fast as possible.
The Revenant had better keep his promise... If he didn't...
Vayle wasn't going to let him off with a few burn wounds next time.

Revenant backed closer to the van as the dead seemed to march closer, meanwhile Vayle had managed to discover the location of several possible power sources. What surprised the armored man more than anything was her willingness to leave a young girl under his protection. Revenant existed to kill hollows mercilessly, that much was true, but few questioned his reasoning for doing so. His family was killed by a hollow, along with his entire village. The plus wanted no child to ever have to suffer the fate he did. That was more than enough reason to defend these people, weather Vayle tolerated him or not...
Turning his head to the young girl, Revenant would shout "Keep your head down kid, and keep your family inside! It's time to bring out the big guns!" Sheathing his sword, Revenant would now draw a portable flame thrower from his back. It was a new, more fancy weapon than his others, and it would prove the downfall of even the most sturdy creatures. Pulling the trigger, a ray of flames would fire forth purging many of the creatures. It even managed to beat them back some. The people inside the van would see a random fire destroying the dead, it was a gruesome sight, but necessary to keep the area secure.
"These creatures just don't know when to--" suddenly, Revenant would feel a drop of rain... Within a few seconds a heavy rainfall would ensue, and the flamethrower's fires would be extinguished! "oh, shit..."

Olive looked to Revenant with a confused look. "...I don't have a family though... 'kay!" The small kid would say with a grin, heading back in to watch the purging from a windowed seat.
Meanwhile, Vayle Rushed forwards, looking for the hollow she was waiting for. The legends spoke of a hollow named "El'gan the dead" directing this place, but the death gods had long ago dismissed that as mere flights of fancy. Still, given the four distinct signatures, it couldn't be completely wrong...
Vayle was forced to duck, as long raking claws nearly took off her head. Slowing down her broom, she felt one of the signatures form up near her.
"Pleased to meet you..." A scorpion-tailed hollow said from behind her. "Nozomi of the north gate. Welcome to our realm of the dead."
Vayle furrowed her brow. "Nozomi... I see. So you're one of the signatures I felt before."
"I am the second strongest of the four death guard. All souls in this area answer to us..." The lithe hollow continues. the mask of a snake hid her relatively humanoid features, and Vayle was surprised at this level of power. it wasn't right for just a hollow... maybe if it was an arrancar..."
Vayle shook her head. She couldn't assume anything definitely. "So, who are the other three, then?"
Nozomi Shook her head. "...Do I look like an idiot?" She asked, throwing her clawed hand to the side for emphasis. "I'm not about to tell you about my brothers!"
"So all male, other than you..." Vayle muttered. This got only narrowed eyes from the hollow woman.
"Anyways, don't worry about it." Nozomi continued. "After all... You're about to die here!"
The hollow struck out with an extendable tail, and Vayle just barely managed to dodge the strike. "Nice try, but Mahoutsukai's a speed zanpakuto first! You'll have to do better than that!"
The sound of a sonic boom was all the warning Vayle got after her proclamation, dashing forward on her broom as fast as she could.
"...If this is all the speed of a speed-based zanpakuto, that means you have quite the weak sword!"
Shit. Vayle grimaced as she turned back around, staring the hollow dead in the eye.
This was going to be more difficult than she thought.

Revenant's flame thrower had been put out by the sudden heavy rainfall, but he still had his blades he could rely on. Pulling the two of them from his side, he would dash into the horde continuing to tear through them all. The more that came, the more that would die. Rage grew within him, slashing off heads, crushing their skulls. He reveled in their suffering, and the same black and red aura would surround him as the rain fall intensified. All the while, he would be defending the van from the creatures. When they began to subside, Revenant would pick up on a powerful energy signature stalking him.
Behind the armored man, crouched on top of a street light, a massive humanoid with incredibly defined muscles watch him. A loud chuckle would fill the air, and the beast would speak to Revenant "I wasn't suppose to leave my post... But you are so close to the west gate. I just couldn't help myself, your soul looks so delicious." The dark beast-man would lick his lips watching Revenant mow down the corpses. The creature's taunts would reach the barserker's ear, causing him to notice the brute. "I am Argrres, the third strongest of the four guardians. Guardian of the west gate of the dead. I hear by challenge you to combat... Revenant!" the creature would leap down from the light, crashing into the ground causing the road to shake.
Entering an offensive stance, the armored man would prepare for the worst as Argrres slowly approched. The reports didn't mention multiple arrancars, but it seemed to be the case. "alright freak! Let's see if you have what it takes!"
The bulky creature would rear back an arm preparing for a massive punch, "Very well, I will show you the strength of our kind little soul!"

Vayle grunted, as she sped forward on her broom as fast as she could, doing a corkscrew to avoid the barrage of Bala headed her way. what was going on? She was told that hollows didn't have the spiritual control to fire bala, that a cero was the best they could do.
The woman grit her teeth. apparently, the eggheads were wrong.
"Having a bit of a problem, are we?" The Hollow yelled, popping right in front of her. Vayle turned around, trying to grab some distance. "if I could just hit her once..." The death god mumbled, building up a rainbow-coloured charge of energy in her reactor.
Nozomi would have none of it though, appearing before Vayle again, and slapping her off her broom with one swipe of her claws.
The death god was sent skidding and flying, smashing through a few trash cans before finally being stopped by a telephone pole, dropping the reactor at her feet.
The hollow in question closed the distance in an instant, holding her claws high.
"I see... You're not just fast, you're incredibly fast." Vayle managed to choke out, struggling and failing to stand. "by burning down trace amounts of your body, you can increase your speed to an unbelievable rate. It means you're far more fragile with your regenerative processes busy with rebuilding yourself, and so your Reishi is too occupied to work as a barrier against attacks. But it doesn't really matter if no one can hit you, right?"
"Given who you are, I'll take the praise handily." Nozomi added. "But time's up for you."
"...One thing." Vayle would finally manage to breathe out, as Nozomi stepped forward. "...There's a kid on that bus. Her name's Olive. She's a nice girl. Wonderful. Loving. Caring. I don't know what your interest is in her, but I have a request... consider it my dying words."
The Hollow grew closer as Vayle grew weaker, grinning. "Please, tell me what it is!" She asked, her tone softening.
"Please, just...I can live with you eating the rest of the passengers. Just... keep her safe. Let her live her life. That's all I can ask."
"Awww, what a well thought-out request." Nozomi would say, her voice softening. "You have a bond with that child, hmm? It's sweet."
Nozomi would clack her claws together on one deformed hand. "let me tell you a secret: One of my hobbies is denying people's dying requests, after seeing them pour their hearts out."
Vayle would look up with a shocked look, struggling to get back on her feet.
"YOu really think we'd let that kid go? She's got more reishi than you do! We've been looking for a suitable candidate to join an elite cadre of hollows, and when we're finished with her, she'll be perfect. I'm sure she'll forget you as soon as she gets hungry... it's almost a shame I can't save you for her first meal. But I can't say I've eaten a death god in a long time... it's time for you to die."
Vayle grinned. "So in the end, you really do look like an idiot."
Nozomi blinked, as a rainbow spark ignited from underneath her. The fallen Miniature reactor.
"Since you've been so kind as to tell me useful information for the sake of your sadism... let me tell you something neat. My zanpakuto's an independent one. She moves on her own will, cooperating with me whenever she feels like it. That's not just limited to the broom."
"N-no!"
"Go to hell you frigid bitch. Love Sign: Master Spark!"
The hollow tried to leap back in fear, and Vayle counted on that as she felt it's reishi shift, leaving it utterly unprotected from the blast of rainbow light that shot straight into the sky, leaving behind not a speck of the hollow.
"One down. Hopefully, they're all that stupid."
