A few minutes after their Recent Duel, Vayle only took a few moments to slip into a human shell known as a "Gigai" - the soul society's favorite technological marvel - And put on a fairly functional black dress with a leather jacket. For some reason, despite Vayle reading that this was what fashion was like in the human world, she seemed to turn quite a few heads in this attire, something that confused her. Was it because this sort of fashion was out of style already? or was this sort of wear not supposed to be worn at a coffee shop? Maybe it was mismatched. She thought about asking her human companion, but she didn't want to admit how hard it was to follow human world fashion. every year it was something new and after she'd had a hundred or so to spare it got hard to keep track. Instead, she ordered a coffee, ignored the blushing look of the server, and sat down opposite her new human "friend.". "I'm going to guess that if you're willing to wear something like that without the benefit of invisibility like us death god's, you don't got much compunctions about talkin' in public... so, while I'm here, let's talk. I got some things to ask you about too, but given I just recently dropped a laser on ya... I can't help but feel like I should be graceful and give you first crack at this. Any questions you'd like the answer to first, or should I just explain the basics of the spirit world in general? " Maybe ask her if she's single?" Vayle looked to a different part of the cafe and rolled her eyes as her sword, despite not being able to participate in the conversation, hit on their new guest. " Seriously? Right now?" " What can I say, master, I get my sensibilities from you, after all!"
"what-ever."

Estrella did not get much of a window of time to change to something more fitting for this coffee conversation she and Vayle planned out on the fly, so she stepped into the cafe wearing the same clothes she had underneath the Ghostbuster suit during their fight - a pair of jeans and a light white blouse with a bra underneath. Sure, it wasn't exactly the best set of clothes she had, perhaps too much of an eye-candy for her taste, but it didn't matter much, as Vayle's human form turned out to be even more teasing than anything she could have put on in that time.
Estrella opted to not point it out, moving along in the cafe and ordering a cappuccino when the server arrived. Which is when Vayle offered her to ask any questions which she might have first, stating that she had just dumped a laser on her and thus it'd only be fair for her to have the first crack at it. The Marquise leaned back in her seat, taking a few gulps from her cup, and opened up:
"So this isn't exactly related to the spirit world, but... are you wearing death god traditional clothing or something? Because, and I'm sorry for being blunt here, but you kinda look like you just stepped out of a brothel."
Estrella took an another sip from her cappuccino cup. "I mean... I'm supposed to be all polite and everything because of my title, but I've never really though that there's a sentence which should be beyond me. What did you call yourself, again? Shini... gami? That's Japanese, isn't it? Man, if that is supposed to mean 'death god', then what is 'origami' supposed to mean? Paper god? Death paper?"

"I, uhhh..." Vayle turned a slight pink. "I kind of picked this out based on what I read humans wear around this century. I can't exactly guess given how often human fashion changes! You have 80 years to live and yet you find so much time to waste deciding on new clothes!" Vayle manages to stutter out, turning bright pink as she realizes what was just said to her.
The wolf whistles from Mahoutsukai did not help her out. "I think I'm going to have to go beat up the research division when I get home..." the shinigami added with an irritated look. "I tend to prefer a more conservative look, honestly."
And with that, Vayle took a deep breath. "Kami can mean both paper and god, but becomes "gami" by being attached to something." Vayle would explain. "so actually, I'd be the death paper. Japanese is... a complex language. it's preferred up in Soul society though." but then the rest of what Estrella said registered, and Vayle looked surprised. "Oh, are you one of those knights or lords I read humans have? Or... I think they're called... rappers now?" Vayle would ask. "...I'm a little new to actually patrolling the human world." she admitted after a moment, scratching the back of her head with an embarrassed look. "only became a Death god about 20 years ago."

"Ah, don't sweat it," Estrella commented after seeing that Vayle got flushed by her comments and the thought that she had dressed up like a brothel resident, snickering a little under her breath. "If it weren't for the place you dragged yourself in looking like that, I'd probably even say that you look pretty good." Turns out that when you live for, presumably, centuries, keeping up with fashion is one of the first things you end up abandoning along the way. Maybe that'd why they keep themselves invisible to everyone, so they wouldn't get laughed at by anyone with at least a smidge of fashion sense...
Vayle followed it up with an explanation on what the word relation between Shinigami and Origami is, and finishing it off with a statement that Japanese is the preferred language up in Soul society. "Paper is god, huh... I mean, I don't know much about Japan besides pop knowledge, but somehow it fits them perfectly." Immediately after, Vayle offered her thoughts on the whole noble titles thing, suddenly stating that, as far as she knows, all the knights and lords of the past are now called rappers.
Rappers.
"Rappers." Estrella repeated Vayle's words. "N-no..." she continued, weakly. "Did... did you say that just because rappers wear gold chains and braces all over the place?.. Because that's not... uh..."
The marquise sighed. For the first time in forever, she was actually left speechless, and promptly shook her head. "Okay, okay okay, okayokayokay. So you've got a whole society of souls somewhere? Up there, I presume?" Estrella pointed upwards. "Why are so many of you roaming this world, then?"

"Ehehehe..." Vayle laughed as Estrella gave a surprising compliment.
"come on. do it. use that hundred and fourty nine years of shinigami experience and-"
"I appreciate the compliment. I spend ninety percent of my time wearing the same black robes and staying in uniform, so it's something where I, uhh, don't get to diversify all that much. and Soul society's very much stuck in the past on that front."
As Estrella went on, Vayle was happy to have enlightened her friend a little about Japanese language. She was equally embarrassed when Estrella questioned her about rappers. "Well, I mean... they both give speeches, draw the hearts of the people, gain power from feudal contracts... It's reasonable is what I'm saying!" Vayle added with a nervous look, nearly spilling her coffee.
She waited for the Marquise to continue before saying anything else, looking like she was trying to hold her breath until Estrella said she was reasonable on that one. at the question, Vayle sighed. "It's... not quite that simple. When someone dies, they become a soul. We call them 'pluses' in our line of work." Vayle would add. "But getting to soul society isn't something possible or even allowed for a plus to do by themselves."
The woman shifted. "When a soul is left on it's own, it gradually decays and becomes less pure. This causes them to turn into what we call "hollows.". Those'd be the ones that look like monsters rather than people." Vayle would note. "And both of them are my job to take care of."
Vayle would give a smile. "Death gods are also called 'soul reapers' for this reason. We purify souls and send 'em to soul society to get them out of the human world, let 'em go to the world they're meant to be in. We also cut down hollows, purifying them of their sins, returning them to their human states, and sending them there too."
And at that, Vayle would give a giant shrug. "Of course, Death gods are super overworked, and we never have enough people with the right amount of power. especially with the population explosion trick you guys pulled about a hundred years ago to get into the billions. So, plenty of souls find a way to slip by and turn into hollows, and..."
A sigh. "People and souls that are eaten by hollows... become hollows themselves."
And with that, Vayle would add. "Oooh, they have lemon meringue here! I'm gonna order some!"[/i]

"...Feudal contracts?" Estrella repeated Vayle's words, wincing. What do feudal contracts have to do, if anything, with rappers? Was she making up something over here, or did she mean... "No, that's called music contracts! They don't have anything to do with knights and lords or anything, it's just... getting paid to make music!"
So Estrella was not going to be the only woman in this bar learning a plethora of new things about the dimension other than the one they call home. Who could have thought that living for so long would actually make you less experienced in how the world works, rather than more? Following that brief exchange, Vayle would move on to explainthe basics of how her job works. So, in brief, she was a soul reaper, helping souls which failed to reach the afterlife to return back home, because if they don't, the souls will get corrupted or something and try to eat people and souls to make more corrupted souls. Okay, that's simple enough.
"So they're like ghost zombies then, I guess." Estrella muttered under her breath, while Vayle exclaimed that she will order lemon meringue. Meringue?! They have it here? "And order some meringue for me too! Pretty please with lemon squeeze!~"
The Marquise wrapped her hands behind her head. "So then, where does this leave me? I've kinda got the idea that I'm the only person who can even see souls like you and the Hollows. Everyone else kinda thinks I'm crazy and I'm shooting nothing when you are clearly out there. So what's up with that?"

Vayle will wince at the statements. "...So they're just, like, artisans, then? Why do they sing about fighting one another and all the battles they've been through and stuff then? I wouldn't think a mere poet would be so experienced and bloodthirsty in taking other people's lives." Vayle will say with visible disappointment. "...If their songs of their heroic deeds are all fake I just don't know why the human world deals with them." She'll add with a look of annoyance.
Estrella seemed a little bit more serious once Vayle explained the human world, then. at least, until Meringue was involved. couldn't blame her.
"I never got that. like, it's clear you're shootin' something, or why would things stop when they hit air?" Vayle asked. "humans can be so smart when it comes to tech, but so dumb when it comes to other stuff... but it makes our job easier, so I'm glad." Vayle will say with a sigh. "...But yeah, that's a bit easier to explain."
Vayle will think for a second. "Souls have a special power... they call it "reishi." in soul society, but we'll just call it "spirit power". It's special energy normally only brought forth by people who've died. Every death god has a bunch of spirit power. Our swords are just concentrated amounts of it, forged to a killing edge, and our magic's all powered by it."
Vayle will take a deep breath. "Humans, however, can grow up with some in their body, too. This would be the case for you, as well. Otherwise, ghosts are just invisible. You're not the only one, but they're an exceeding rarity... and ones with enough power to clearly see ghosts are even rarer." Vayle would explain. "So... That leaves you as a brilliant human, who has a lot of spirit power even in this life, who's got front-row tickets to being a Death god herself in the next life." Vayle would explain. "Heck, with as much power as you got now, you might even be able to try for a captain's rank when you finally kick the bucket. And that's about as high as you can get."
And at that statement, the pie finally came, and Vayle immediately took a big bite. "ohhh my god..." The girl stated after a long swallow. "they don't serve these in soul society unless you really go looking... I always try to order one when I'm sent to the human world."

"I don't know about you, but it doesn't seem like Shinigami like you are all that much smarter, either," Estrella commented in response to Vayle's statement about humans. "At least that's what I would be able to glean from what you interpret rap battles to be..." What the Shinigami continued her response with, however, about a mysterious special power which souls possess called Reishi, or spirit power, was much more interesting. In fact, it gave her the idea that she should probably be taking notes - this is information about the abilities which she's always had and yet knew nothing about, after all. Estrella's finger brushed across the bracelet on her right hand, activating her holographic pad in which she immediately started typing.
"Right, so it's kind of like-" the Marquise was about to comment on the concept, only to get cut short when they got meringue cakes delivered to their table. "Oh, oh, oh!" Taking a bite of her own and gulping down the crisp sweet, Estrella put on a wide smile. Tastes just like home - and Vayle was even more excited over it. "Hey, hey, hey, you know what I said about what you look like? Well now you're going to make them think you're wetting yourself over a meringue..."
After that brief joke, Estrella pressed a finger on her chin, thinking about the information she received. "Reishi, huh? Spirit power? A some sort of energy which only the dead and a rare strata of the living are able to interact with, which, I presume, is also why you and all the other ghosts have all of your unique abilities... From the way you describe it, it kinda sounds like a fundamental force of sorts. Which just so happens to not interact with electromagnetism and thus leaves anyone not in touch with that force kinda... blind... I mean, I only know a single sentence about this stuff, so take everything I say with a grain of salt."
Estrella leaned back, then snickered. "Hmmm... Hey, if I find out how this stuff works and present it to the scientific community, do you think I could get away with calling it Altamirano Force?"

"Well excuse me, but I happen to be very focused on the other parts of my duties." Vayle would add with a hint of pink going through her cheeks again. "I'm very busy learning stuff like purifying ghosts with Konso, Slashing up hollows, and..." Vayle sighed. "well, since I became the 20th seat of my division, I've also got a pretty reasonably amoutn of paperwork to do myself. At least I don't have it as bad as my captain does. without a lieutenant, he has twice the work to do, and all on his own..." Vayle would turn bright red at the statement. "w-well, whatever! I-I'm a top soul reaper! the stares of short-lived humans means n-n-nothing to me! I've got a very important position!" making those statements with a huff, Vayle blinked back tears of embarassment as she realized how much of an idiot she looked like right now. "A-anyways... You're actually not far off the mark." Vayle would add. "The living can interact with it to some degree, and souls are made from a core of it, but only a few people make more than they consume to live. It creates some issues, such as causing you to be hungry after death, but lets you do cool things with it. It's not some mystical bond, though." Vayle will note. "The Death gods have thirteen divisions. The twelfth division is also known as the Shinigami Research and Development institute. they do a bunch of sciencey stuff with it, like you guys do in general down here, to create things by understanding it better." Vayle tugged on a bit of her skin. "It's how they figured out how to make cool faux bodies like these! Or some giant cannons! or the sword-door that-you know what let's not discuss the sword door it's stupid." Vayle would add with a look of annoyance at the last one. As Estrella snickered, Vayle snickered too. "you'd make every man and woman in the 12th division angry and jealous of the recognition! So what I'm saying is, , go for it girl!" Vayle would respond, chortling through her words. "Man, I'd love to see Captain Akon's face after he found out!" Lady Arcadia

Seeing Vayle get all flushed and declare that an important death god such as herself cannot possibly be bothered by a few stares from short-lived humans, even if that was clearly the case, got Estrella to release a loud chuckle. "Sure, suure, you're definitely the most composed girl in the whole tri-state area, not a single teasing glance could go through that shell of yours... certainly..." She punctuated her comment with a wink.
What Vayle spoke of later, however, was just as interesting. Ghost scientists. That's basically what it amounted to. They've got ghost scientists out there in the afterlife, working on... god knows what ghosts would need research into. Reishi, probably. God damn it, she's really going to need to find a better name for that fundamental force once she actually starts working on it, "spirit power" implies far too many spiritual things than a woman of hard science such as herself could allow herself to endure.
"I don't know who that is, but you can count on me. Trust me, I've got magic hands when it comes to this stuff." the Marquise replied and offered a thumbs-up before returning to her thoughts again. "So, I take it you guys have been behind all the other times when spirits were involved in the past? You know... like how when tribal shamans would make a song and a dance in front of a campfire, that'd drag out one of you from the afterlife, right? Oh, and what about the big G upstairs? Assuming that, y'know, all this soul society stuff involves him as well."
